Galerie Seippel was openend by the art historian Dr. Ralf-P. Seippel in Cologne in 1993. From that time until now, the focus has been on innovative and international contemporary art. In 2000 Seippel Gallery has moved from Cologne's »Belgisches Viertel« (Belgian District) into more spacious rooms on Zeughausstrasse 26 (Haus der Stiftungen). It is now situated in Cologne's main gallery district, within easy walking distance of the Cathedral and directly across from the famous »Römerturm« (Roman Tower), the oldest upright standing building in Cologne (50 p.c.).
Since 1997, Dr. Ralf-P. Seippel has also been active in South Africa in the field of art consulting as well as curating and organising commercial and non-comercial exhibitions. In 2007, Seippel Gallery Johannesburg was established as a spot for showing both upcoming European and Southafrican contemporary art. First situated in August House, Doornfontein, Seippel Gallery Johannesburg later moved into a new exhibition space at Arts on Main, downtown Johannesburg. Seippel Gallery Johannesburg exhibits currently at different venues.
The Gallery's artists represent a wide field of contemporary art, such as painting, sculpture, photography, graphics, video, installation and light installation.
Also, numerous non-commercial exhibitions, workshops, and artist-in-residence programs have been supported by Galerie Seippel Cologne Johannesburg and organised together with other partners and noted museums worldwide. Whenever possible the gallery publishes catalogues to accompany exhibitions, be they in the gallery or in co-operation with the gallery.
